Homelessness in Toronto Canada- 2019
Our shelter system continues to face overcrowding that has left many individuals homeless.
Most shelters are operating to capacity since Spring of 2018. The following stats are from the city of Toronto’s website:
Since 2017- 4366 individuals have been homeless needing a shelter bed or shelter services
In 2019 – 6886 people have used the shelter system nightly.
The city of Toronto says the shelter system has between 6874- 7366 beds, available which includes school campuses, out of the cold emergency beds, shelters, hostels, and motels already being used for overflow.
2018 saw over 32 extreme cold alerts issued by the city of Toronto. In 2019 the city issued 27 extreme cold alerts.
Toronto’s Homeless Memorial has seen countless deaths since its inception. The Memorial has well over 800 deaths many of whom remain anonymous on a never-ending list.
Since the start of 2018 there has been an average of 3-4 homeless deaths on the streets in Toronto per week. The average age is between 50 years and 59 years old.
From January 2017 to June 2018 – 145 homeless people have died on the streets in Toronto.
