Stat's for Homelessness in Toronto 2020

The following stat’s are from the city of Toronto website updated for 2020 regarding homelessness.

Currently there are:

  • 102, 049 individuals are on the waiting list for social housing in Toronto ( as of 2019 Stat’s.)
  • 7319 individuals currently use the shelter system, motels or family housing as updated Feb 18th 2020.
  • 995 homeless individuals have died on the streets in Toronto as of Feb. 2020.
  • 93% is the current occupancy rate in Toronto.
  • 740 families live in shelters and motels daily.
  • 2250 families are housed permanently in motels.

The following are the annual numbers for shelter use:

  • 78,318 individuals used the shelter system in 2018.
  • 82,130 individuals used the shelter system in 2019.
  • 6800+ (TBA) have stayed in shelters so far in 2020.

Nightly shelter use:

  • In 2018-6500 individuals used the shelter system nightly.
  • In 2019- 6900 individuals were in and out of the shelter system per day.
  • In 2020- is averaging over 7000 individuals per day.

 

In 2017-18 there were 31 extreme cold alert days issued by the city of Toronto  leaving many at risk without emergency shelter.

In 2018-2019 there were 27 extreme cold alert days issued by the city with a need to provide more beds for at risk people living outside.

Many new shelters have opened for the Homeless aiding those needing emergency beds. Unfortunately most are not downtown Toronto leaving little access to key amenities like meals and clothing.
